Synopsis

Programme on the Fourth International Maxol Marathon held in Manchester on 4 June 1972 (marred by poor picture quality). Opens with archive footage of Brit Jim Peters staggering across the finish line at the 1954 Commonwealth Games Marathon in Vancouver. A now-retired Jim Peters interviews numerous athletes taking part including British Champion Ron Hill at his home in Romiley, twenty-three year-old Don Fairclough of Croydon Harriers, forty-one year-old Arthur Walsham of Bolton Harriers and Canadian Ron Wallingford. Peter Godshall, Secretary of the Road Runners' Club, is shown briefing the course marshals and Bernard Baldwin, of the Amateur Athletic Association, starts the race. There is footage of the race itself, from the start in St Peters Square to the finish at Old Trafford Football Stadium. Various athletes are shown including Ron Hill, Arthur Walsham, eventual winner Lutz Philipp of Germany, Ferde Le Grange and Peter Real of South Africa , Rrista Markey of Finland, Maurice Kaplan of Manchester YMCA, Perez and Fernandez of Spain, Stailin of Holland, Oat of Germany, Hains of Blackheath Harriers, Roberts of Cambridge and Coleridge AC, Caise of Ealing AC, Newton of Luton United AC, Speaker of Germany, Austin of Worcester AC, Freary of Bolton Harriers, Lee of Salford Harriers, Anderforn of Germany, Herrcock of Enfield AC, Slatter of Wigan Phoenix, Ricky Wilde, Glaxton of Cambridge Harriers, Forster of Austria and Ercock of GB.
