Issue 226

Servicemen in the Far East send personal messages home to their loved ones in Manchester and elsewhere in the North West. The film opens in a garden setting as the men march along a path singing ‘Glory Glory What a Hell of a Way to Die’. Messages are delivered in relaxed settings around the grounds, before the whole group march off singing ‘Glory Glory’ again, waving and shouting out their farewells.

Issue 241

Servicemen in Malaya send personal messages home to their loved ones in Manchester and elsewhere in the North West. The film opens in a garden setting as the men march over a bridge and towards the camera singing ‘Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty’. Messages are delivered in relaxed settings around the grounds, before the film ends with the whole group marching towards the camera singing ‘Show Me the Way to Go Home’ and saying cheerio as they pass.

Issue 246

Servicemen on leave at Penang racecourse in Malaya, send personal messages home to their loved ones in the North West of England. The film opens with the group marching towards the camera singing ‘She’s a Lassie from Lancashire’. Messages are delivered in relaxed settings around the grounds, before the film ends with the whole group marching past the racecourse stand towards the camera singing ‘It’s a Long Way to Tipperary’, waving and shouting cheerio as they pass.

Issue 266

Servicemen from the Army and the Royal Air Force send personal messages to their loved ones back in Birkenhead from a beach in Bombay, India. The film ends with the men walking across a wooden bridge, smiling and waving at the camera, with the sea in the background.

Issue 273

Servicemen from Manchester, Stockport and Salford send personal messages home to their loved ones from the grounds of Central Studios in Bombay. The men deliver their messages in a variety of set-piece situations: in the garden, in a courtyard, listening to the radio by a parked car and on a bench. Includes a brief scene in which one group ‘interrupts’ filming to ask what is going on and are invited to deliver their own messages. The film ends with the group of contributors walking silently away from the camera, turning back to wave as they go.

Issue 285

Men from the Army and RAF from the Brighton and Hastings areas send personal messages back home to their loved ones from a film studio in Bombay decked out as a canteen. After the messages have been delivered, the camera pans around the room as the group wave and say cheerio.

Issue 299

Men serving in India send personal messages home to their loved ones in and around Manchester. The film opens with three men taking turns to deliver their messages in front of a temple, before further groups of contributors take their turns around the grounds. Ends with the men approaching the camera in pairs, waving and saying their goodbyes as music plays in the background.

Issue 311

From a film studio set in Bombay, men serving in India send personal messages home to their loved ones in Manchester and the North West of England. In the opening scenes, pairs of men sit at tables and deliver their messages one by one, straight to camera. Further contributors appear around different parts of the ‘mess room’ set. The film ends with the group seated at tables, waving and saying cheerio as the camera quickly pans round the room and music plays.

Issue 328

From a film studio set in Bombay decked out to look like a ‘mess room’, men serving in India send personal messages home to their loved ones in and around Manchester. The film opens with two similar-looking men who suspend their game of darts to introduce the first contributors. Further set piece techniques are used around the set to introduce more groups of callers. Ends with the men picking up their hats and leaving the room, saying their personal goodbyes, as the gramophone plays ‘I’ll be Seeing You’.

Issue 361

On leave in Malabar Hill in Bombay, servicemen send personal messages home to their loved ones in Manchester, Salford and elsewhere in the North West. The men approach the camera in pairs and threes to deliver their messages straight to camera in a garden setting. The film ends with the men walking to the camera in pairs to say their goodbyes as music plays in the background.

Issue 388

On leave in Malabar Hill in Bombay, servicemen send personal messages home to their loved ones in Manchester, Salford and Stockport. After an opening view of the Bombay skyline, a group of soldiers stroll along a track past the camera as an officer with a handheld microphone invites three of them to deliver their own message home. Further contributors are filmed in other parts of the leafy grounds before the group walk away from the camera and back down the track, turning to wave and say goodbye as they depart.

Issue 391

On leave in Malabar Hill in Bombay, servicemen (and one woman) send personal messages home to their loved ones in Brighton. Film concludes with a final message from ‘John’ behind the camera to his own family. This is the last issue of the Calling Blighty series of films.

Issue 401

On a canteen-style film set in Bombay, servicemen from York take turns to approach the camera and send personal messages back to their loved ones at home. After the individual messages have been delivered, the participants join together in singing “We’ll Meet Again”.

Issue 402

A group of servicemen from York, Leeds and Doncaster (and other parts of South Yorkshire) are filmed together in a jungle clearing, seated in the background in front of huts, as each man takes his turn to come forward to the camera to send a personal message home to his loved ones. The Sargeant Major leads them into a chorus or two of “On Ilkley Moor bar tat” to finish.
