MILITARY FUNERAL AT BURY

Scenes from the funeral of Sergeant-Major George Ash on 11 March 1915. A procession of soldiers moves down a cobbled street lined with spectators. Soldiers form a guard of honour for the coffin which is carried from the horse-drawn hearse into the church. Civilians and soldiers follow the coffin inside.

Compilation of newsreel items from the Liverpool area. Lord Derby's recruiting band (band of the King's Liverpool regiment?) are seen on Lower Breck Road, Anfield, 1915, followed by F.L. Joseph and James Parker MP addressing the crowd and the band marching past Anfield Post Office and John Irwin Sons and Co Ltd. Wounded soldiers are seen being unloaded from ambulances before going on a sea trip. The third section shows a Liverpool Police Inspection at Sefton Park on 22nd June 1922 and the final story shows the air minister attending a ceremony at Chester Cathedral in November 1927 for airmen who fell during the First World War.

THE EARL OF STAMFORD UNVEILS THE CHAPEL STREET ROLL OF HONOUR, ALTRINCHAM APL 5 1919

A group of men in uniform poses in Chapel Street. There is then a procession of soldiers and civilians through Altrincham where the streets are lined with cheering crowds. A horse-drawn carriage and bicycles bring up the rear,and the procession passes the Altrincham Picture Theatre where the staff are gathered outside. In Chapel Street a plaque is unveiled by the Earl of Stamford who makes a speech, while a large crowd watches.

Shows various shots of the Peace Celebrations in Haslingden after World War 1 - there are scenes of the crowds and a procession of children; children can also be seen in a variety of National Costume and are maypole dancing. People are dancing in the open air and enjoying themselves; it ends with a procession of war veterans, bands and civilians through the town streets.

Commercial feature film produced by Altrincham County High School (for educational purposes) in 1929. The film focuses upon a theme of disarmament set in medieval Britain. A tale unfolds about a young boy's quest to find the 'glittering sword' . Once the sword is in the king's possession, he declares war on the world - a battle commences and the boy regains peace by throwing the sword into the middle of a river.
 
 
 
CAVALCADE OF BURNLEY

A record of local events in Burnley from 1932 through to 1950. Features a 1932 Hospital Carnival, a Burnley v Luton football match from 1935 and the last tram to run in the town on 7th May 1935. Wartime footage includes the activities of the Burnley Home Guard and a 'Wings for Victory' parade along Colne Road in 1943. King George VI visits Burnley on 8th March 1945 before newspaper headlines announce the end of the war and there are shots of street parties, dancing outside the Town Hall, fires being lit, a thanksgiving service at St Peters Church and an outdoor concert and ceremony at Towneley Park. The film ends with footage from the 1950 General Election at which local Labour MP Wilfrid Burke retains his seat. GALLIPOLI REVISITED A PILGRIMAGE CRUISE 1934

Past and present servicemen mark the 19th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, on board the 'Duchess of Richmond' cruise ship. They pass the Straits of Gibraltar and on the 25th of April a memorial service is held on the ship's deck. Wreaths to various regiments are shown in close up; including one dedicated to the Turkish soldiers that also lost their lives. Further footage includes informal shots of the men drinking rum and beer from an assortment of metal containers.

They are seen at anchor in Khelia Bay and visiting various battlefields, cemeteries and memorials. George VI and Queen Elizabeth are seen being greeted by civic dignitaries at the Marine Hall in Fleetwood on their 1938 Tour of Lancashire, and the Royal Train is seen leaving the town. During War Weapons Week of 19th to 26th April 1941, there is a firefighting demonstration in Memorial Park, the fund-raising totals are unveiled by the mayor and a party of civic dignitaries is seen on the steps of a building.

A military procession of servicemen and women passes through the centre of Preston. Scenes from an event to raise funds for planes for the RAF - "Wings for Victory." Shots of the crowd in front of a stage, speeches are made and a number of racing pigeons are released. The sign on the stage reads "Our Target - £1,000,000." Footage from a cricket match concludes. Footage from three Civic Sunday processions in Fulwood, Preston. Assorted clergy, dignitaries, servicemen and youth groups are seen on route to Fulwood Parish Church. Following the service, they are seen leaving the church and heading back through the streets. No servicemen or police are filmed at the 1940 procession due to "war restrictions." Also includes brief scenes of children playing in a park, and exterior and interior views of the new County Branch Library.
