Moving Images of Merseyside Survey

The North West Film Archive has been providing a public film archive service to the three counties of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire since 1977. However, for historical reasons, the five boroughs of Merseyside (Knowsley, Liverpool, St Helens, Sefton and Wirral) have been outside the remit of any regional film archive since 1986.

Thanks to new funding from North West Vision and the Merseyside Archive Liaison Group, and continuing support from Manchester Metropolitan University, the first steps have been taken in addressing this situation and integrating film and video relating to Merseyside into the North West Film Archive's collection.

Between August and December 2005 the North West Film Archive conducted a survey of moving image collections held in Merseyside. A total of 92 collections consisting of over 12,000 items of film and video were included in the survey and an additional five collections have been added to the database since the initial survey period.

All of these collections are now searchable via the Merseyside Survey Database. This is a collection-level database that provides a description of the probable content of each collection. For further information about any of the collections on the database, and on how to access material from them, please contact the North West Film Archive.
