MANCHESTER VT: RNW A82/4: David Davies, snf, talking to Professor Phillip Holloway, of the Manchester University Dental School, about his statement that the old-fashioned ideas about looking after children’s teeth are “out-dated”. He’s produced figures that 75% of all five-year olds have decay - and so do 90% of school leavers - the real problem being sugar. The answer, according to Professor Holloway, is regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and adding fluoride to the water supplies. 3’03’’ RNW A842/5: Stuart Hall, talking to Jeff Nuttall, an artist and lecturer at Leeds Polytechnic, about his book on Frank Randall, the Lancashire comedian. 3’18’’ STUDIO: David Davies, snf, with a report on the emergency debate by Tynwald, the Isle of Man Parliament, on the ruling by the European Convention on Human Rights that birching is archaic and barbaric. The whole question of birching will be debated at next month’s sitting - and the emergency debate followed by the announcement that members of the Council of Europe were quite satisfied with assurances given by the United Kingdom Government that birching was now no longer allowed. 1’22’’
