Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Duke of Edinburgh arriving at the Town Hall to be greeted by the Lord MAyor of Manchester, and several ex-lord Mayors of MAnchester. The Queen Acknowledged the crowds in the square in front of the town Hall and went inside to see the portrait taken of her by Micheal Noakes which now hangs in the Town Hall. The tour started in Lancaster, where she inspected the 4th Battalion (Volunteer) of the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment and went on to the Market Square for a walk about and to Dr Martons Music House. Felicity Goodey snf took up the tour at Wigan and the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were greeted by the GM County officials, including the Lord Lieutenant as well as the local Wigan Civic Dignitaries. She inspected the Duke of Lancaster’s Yeomen of the Guard before going on to Leigh where she was entertained by 60 local schoolchildren performing 4 mystery plays . She also saw an exhibition of art by very young and very old handicapped local people before going on to the garden party at Old Trafford. Higginson Commag
