Synopsis

Programme from a series focusing on individuals from the North West with successful careers. Opens with shots of a busy Wigan market, where Dave Whelan started a family business in 1965. Whelan speaks about his original cut-price stall which faced opposition from local traders. Whelan is seen in his office and he gives his views on business. He recounts the development of his stores: starting with Whelan and Taylor market stall, Whelan Discount Stores then Whelan Brothers. He mentions the recent addition of JJB Sports Limited. Whelan is shown playing squash. Exterior and interior shots of an out-of-town Whelan Discount Store in St Helens is seen and Whelan talks about out-of-town stores as the future of retail.
