Synopsis |
Presenter Bill Grundy examines the enormous influence Samuel Oldknow (1756-1828), who was born in Anderton, Lancashire, had on the areas of Mellor, Marple and Marple Bridge, in particular, his input into the area's canal system and textile industry. Includes shots of various examples of Oldknow's constructions, including 'Oldknow's Chair', 'Oldknow's Bridge', Bottoms Hall Estate, the viaduct in Stockport, Heaton Mersey Bleachworks, Oldknow's Mill in Stockport, Mellor Mill and Possett Bridge near Marple. Also features general views of the Goyt Valley, the Peak Forest near Buxton, the aqueduct across the River Goyt, the Roman Lakes, Bottom's Hall Estate. Oldknow's associations with Richard Arkwright and his financial problems are described. |
