Synopsis

Presenter Frank Mellor visits Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston, Cumbria. He interviews Managing Director Tony Wallace and Head Brewer Jim Maltman about the traditional style in which Hartley's beer is brewed. The brewing process is shown: malted barley, sugar and hops are boiled in a vat with water, yeast is added and the fermentation process begins, wooden casks are steam cleaned, filled with beer and rolled onto lorries. Mellor goes on to describe 'modern pubs' and there are scenes of pub interiors showing various changes that British pubs have undergone: the acceptiance of female patrons, the provision of pool tables, video games and gambling machines and the serving of food.
