Synopsis |
Four market-related film inserts. Frank Mellor visits Ashton-under-Lyne market and describes its history and popularity. There is black and white archive footage from the 1920s of food produce being unloaded off a ship, the interior of a food auction and market scenes (see NWFA main collection film no. 168). Market traders at Manchester's New Smithfield market are interviewed by Mellor about how the market trade has changed and the rising prices they face (includes shots of beetroot being harvested). Kendal is then featured as a once thriving market town that has changed its emphasis (includes shots of a street pageant, a spinning wheel demonstration, a shoe factory and a horse garment factory). |
