Synopsis |
Programme made to mark the fortieth anniversary of World War Two, focusing on the North West and looking at the contribution North West army regiments made. Opens with title sequence for the series "North West at War". Men from Fulwood Barracks, Preston - Headquarters of the North West District - are shown on parade with a band playing. There are then shots of territorial units on a training exercise at the Ministry of Defence range at Warton in Lancashire. There is archive footage of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk in 1940: in the sea, on boats and two soldiers speaking at a train station. There are shots of a map showing the retreat of British troops to Dunkirk, boats and planes, bomb-damaged streets and a Nazi flag (02m22s to 04m45s). There is further archive footage of Winston Churchill, Navy boats and a submarine, from around D-Day (June 6 1944) (05m22s to 06m13s). |
