Synopsis |
Extracts from the fourth and final programme in the 'North and South' series in which reporters Felicity Goodey and Nick Clarke compare and contrast the Southern town of Luton in Bedfordshire with the Northern town of Preston. The programme looks at how the decline of the manufacturing industry has affected both towns. Preston's derelict mills, disused port and job redundancies are highlighted and similarities are drawn with job cuts at Vauxhall and high unemployment in Luton. A move towards service industries in the future is discussed, the growth of the engineering and computing industries Luton and a new dock development plan for Preston are mentioned. |
