Synopsis

Programme in which Barbara Castle - ex-Labour MP for Blackburn, Chairman of the Labour Party and Government Minister - returns to Oxford University where she was a student. Opens with stills of Castle as a youngster interspersed with shots of residential streets in Oxford, Oxford University and gondolas on the River Cherwell. There is a close up of St Hugh's College's Register of Students 1927 to 1931 showing Castle as 'Barbara Annie Betts'. Film follows a double-decker bus to Mottram Road in Hyde, where Castle is seen walking through the streets. There are shots of Castle speaking to passers by in a 'Get Britain Out' (anti EEC membership) campaign. Stills show Castle with her husband, Clement Attlee and Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and other stills show bombed London during the war and people sleeping in Holborn Underground Station.
