Synopsis |
Programme on North West industries, presented by a New Zealand presenter. The first part describes the decline of the North West's textile industry and Liverpool's sugar refining industry, which mentions the impact of the Common Market. Includes stills of Lowry paintings, shots of the interior of a cotton factory and the exterior of "Seddon Cottage", Richard John Seddon's (Prime Minister of New Zealand 1893-1906) house near St Helens. New North West industries are described: communications, chemicals and aerospace and workers at "Henry Simon Limited" in Cheadle Heath, Stockport are shown. The second part of the programme focuses on the hi-tech industry, which employs 100,000 people in the North West. The interior of the Ferrantis factory is shown, which produces circuit boards for computers and a manager is interviewed. There are shots of the successful Stampleton Printing Works at Whalley Bridge, which prints adhesive labels for computer discs. There are brief shots of Market Street in Manchester. The third part of the programme deals with the booming tourism industry in the North West, which employs 50,000 people. The presenter visits Albert Dock and Wigan Pier. There are shots of Blackpool seafront, general views of the Lake District and an interview with Walter Hirst, a clog maker who has benefited from tourism. |
