Synopsis

Extracts from the first programme in the 'North and South' series in which reporters Felicity Goodey and Nick Clarke compare and contrast the Southern town of Luton in Bedfordshire with the Northern town of Preston. Focusing on past economic growth and recent decline, Nick Clarke looks at the impact Vauxhall Motors has had on Luton in the twentieth century, its disappearing straw hat manufacturing industry and its transition from manufacturing to service industries. Felicity Goodey examines Preston's historical importance. Council officials from both towns are interviewed about the two towns' problems and strengths.
