Synopsis |
Opens with Young Enterprise Show opening title sequence. The first part of the programme shows Presenter Mike Sweeney visiting Stretford Athletics Stadium in Longford Park (also known as Trafford Athletics Stadium). There are shots of young athletes training on the outdoor track, sprinting, hurdling and doing long jump. Shirley Strong is shown sprinting and she is interviewed by Sweeney about the upcoming trials for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles (Strong went on to win 100m hurdles silver at the Olympics). Her coach Jim Harris is interviewed about the hard work involved in training. Sweeney is shown jokily doing the hurdles to 'Chariots of Fire' music, knocking them all down and then falling over. The second part of the programme features two young girls from Bury who set up the Stewart Street Day Nursery in Bury for pre-school children. They are shown with their families painting and decorating the nursery, then with toddlers once the centre is open. The girls speak about their decision to set up the business and their hopes for expansion in the future. There are shots of toddlers playing with toys, drawing, doing jigsaws, painting and reading at the centre. 11m36s |
