Synopsis

Programme on the life and work of professional artist Alan Lowndes (1921-1978), born in Stockport. Many of Lowndes' oil paintings are shown and there are shots of his subject matter: Stockport streetscenes, houses and mills. He is shown in his studio painting and talking about how his work differs from that of L. S. Lowry, who he has been compared to, the process of painting and art in general. An exhibition of his work is shown at Stockport Municipal Art Gallery and people there are interviewed about his talents. Stockport market and shopping precinct are shown and Lowndes shows us a mural he painted on a wall of a Stockport pub. He is seen briefly with his wife and children at their home in Gloucester. Lowndes then visits St Ives, where he lived after leaving Stockport. There is footage of him at St Ives seafront and shots of his paintings of the area. He speaks about the art scenes in both Stockport and St Ives. Ends with Lowndes signing one of his paintings.
