Synopsis

Reporter Frank Mellor goes to the industrial centre of Ellesmere Port, a town with 'a bustling past and faltering present' due to the economic recession. Various industries are shown in decline. Employees at the Bowater Paper plant (earmarked for closure in November 1980) are shown working in the factory and timber yards. Bob French of the 'Save Bowater's Action Group' is interviewed about the campaign to keep the factory open. Ray Burney, the local authority's Chief Executive is interviewed about the problem of youth unemployment in the town and Tony Edmundson, of the Careers Office, gives advice for unemployed youngsters. Malcolm Crossland, Editor of the local newspaper 'The Pioneer' speaks about new firms investing in the town. There are shots of chemical and engineering works, the Vauxhall car factory and other manufacturing plants and the docks. Also includes vox pops with school leavers about their job prospects.
