Synopsis

Follows the production of an unconventional school nativity play - Ted Hughes' 'The Coming of the Kings' - by Elmers' Green Primary School in Skelmersdale. Narrator gives a history of Skelmerdale, its promising beginnings and current problems with unemployment and crime. The children give their views on the town, which are mostly positive. There is footage of teacher Anne Waterhouse teaching the pupils, the pupils rehearsing for the play, teacher Beryl Sayer teaching the children about costume, the children singing carols and the final performance of the play.
