Synopsis

Opens with Homeground title sequence. Presenter Frank Mellor visits various places on the Wirral Peninsular. Opens with general views of the Mersey Ferry, Liverpool underground railway system and Wirral waterfront. Staff at the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences at Bidston Observatory are shown gathering data on tides and currents in the River Mersey and there are general views of the Stanlow oil refinery near Ellesmere Port. Vehicle fuels are shown being tested in Thornton and a man is interviewed. Mellor then visits New Brighton and interviews former Publicity Manager Ernest Warrington about New Brighton's booming past and current demise. There are shots of New Brighton pier and beach and Birkenhead's Hamilton Square. Factory workers are shown manufacturing inflatable life rafts and life jackets in Birkenhead. The last shrimper in Parkgate, Colin Mealer, is interviewed and there are shots of Parkgate sea wall and promenade and pleasure boats moored at Thurstaston. Ends with brief mute shots of nightime traffic.
