Synopsis |
Second programme in the series Lancashire Lads. Tells the story of Samuel Laycock (1826-1893), a famous Lancashire dialect poet who was born near Saddleworth and lived in Stalybridge, written and narrated by Bill Grundy. Poems featured include "Only a poet" and "Cheer up a bit longer ". Laycock's poems are spoken and sung out of view by Judith Barker, Karen Petrie, Geoffrey Banks, Russell Dixon and Ian Mercer with strong Lancashire accents. There are extensive shots of Stalybridge: aerial views of the town, the River Tame, Cocker Hill, the Market Hall and cottages. Also includes shots of elderly people, a sleeping baby, the interior of a supermarket and "Waugh's Well", a memorial dedicated to fellow Lancashire poet Edwin Waugh, on moorland near Edenfield. |
