Synopsis |
Programme about Liverpool South Docks and plans for its redevelopment made when the docks (owned by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company) were facing financial crisis and about to close. A male presenter describes the Port of Liverpool as the greatest port in the world and there are various shots of the Liverpool waterfront and surrounding area. Various redevelopment schemes for the Docks are detailed (the building of a Maritime Museum, the housing of Liverpool Polytechnic), especially plans for the Albert Dock, and people are interviewed about the future of the Docks. A 'South Docks Development Company' meeting is shown where members speak of taking over the docks and giving them back to the people of Liverpool. The Liverpool City Planning Department (Wilberforce House) is shown: a planner speaks of improving the waterfront area with offices, housing and a marina. London Docklands are shown and spokesmen are interviewed about how they've successfully redeveloped the area. The Canning Place/Frederick Street area and the Baltic Fleet pub in Liverpool are shown. A painter who lives in the Liverpool South Docks is interviewed about his concerns about what will happen to the area. A spokesman is interviewed at the South Street Sea Port in New York. Liverpool Docks' buoy store is shown. |
