Synopsis

Programme featuring the University of Liverpool's Veterinary Field Station at Leahurst on Wirral, where unusual and specialist cases are referred. Assorted scenes of dogs, calves, horses, sheep and birds at the centre are shown. A vet describes a case involving Jasper, an underweight boxer dog. He gives Jasper a barium swallow and examines his stomach by x-ray. A horse with a wound on its leg is featured and we see it being given anaesthetic, passing out and being lifted by crane onto an operating area. There are quite detailed shots of two vets performing a skin graft on the horse and the horse recovering afterwards. A man explains a breeding project at the centre that creates ewes that produce three lambs rather than two and a man does tests on eggs in a laboratory to check for diseases. A colt foal with a hernia is shown being operated on and the vet talks through the procedure in some detail. The foal is shown returning to its box after the operation.
