Synopsis |
Programme two in the series. Programme from a series involving Stuart Hall interviewing various collectors. Opens with title sequence for the series "The Hall Collection". Programme focuses on the 18th century Helmshore Textile Mill near Rossendale which houses a collection of textile machinery. There are shots of the disused loading bay and water wheel. Derek Pilkington, who used to be a filling stock collector and who now is recreating the mill, describes the processes in the woollen industry. Jim Barlow, who used to operate the stocks 50 years earlier, demonstrates the stocks. There are shots of a mangle, tenterhooks and spinning wheels, including reproductions of a Spinning Jenny (invented by James Hargreaves) and Richard Arkwright's Spinning Water Frame. |
