Synopsis |
John Humphrys reports on how joining the Common Market would affect the North West. Different industries are looked at in turn: dairy farming, the horticultural industry, fishing industry, textile industry and motor industry. Austrian Carl Jenning expresses concern from his dairy farm at Malpas in Cheshire. Fylde market gardener Jack Ashton describes why he changed from growing tomatoes to pot plants. The poor future for Fleetwood fishermen is described and there are shots of trawlers out at sea. Female workers at Highams in Accrington are shown and Mr Higham is interviewed. Mr Lilley at TVR sports car factory in Blackpool describes the problems with importing cars to Europe and there are scenes from inside the TVR factory and multinational motor factories in the region. Some 'experts' give their views, mostly agreeing that joining the Common Market would mean increased competition and efficiency in the North West. |
