Synopsis |
Three aspects of Cumbrian life are shown. Frank Mellor attends a Cumberland Grassland Society demonstration, in which West Cumbrian farmers are shown new machinery for cutting grass and baling hay and a Ministry of Agriculture spokesman is interviewed. Mellor then investigates the proliferation of European cattle breeds on Cumbrian farms and visits father and son farmers William and Bernard Parsons from Milnthorpe who believe French Charolais cattle have better quality meat than British beef. Finally, Mellor revisits Dick Capstick, a farmer from Lunesdale he visited a year previously, who suggests financial conditions for farmers are slightly better than a year ago due to government subsidies. |
