Synopsis

Programme in which presenter Ian Nairn visits Wigan which he describes as a "real Northern town" and highlights the town's architectural virtues. There are various shots of Wigan town centre, Market Hall, Wigan Pier, outdoor market, railway station, terraced housing, smoking chimneys and people in streets. Includes footage of market trader selling goods. Examples of good planning and architecture in Wigan are shown and described by Nairn, including St John's Catholic Church and "Marketplace" - Wigan's main shopping street. Also shown is an example of poor architecture: a new housing area which Nairn describes as lacking character. There are shots of Wigan Rugby Football Club with people drinking in the bar.
