Synopsis |
Programme five in the series. Programme about the British Heavy Goods Vehicle industry, opening with shots of lorries on a motorway. The presenter describes the takeover of HGV manufacturers Atkinson of Preston by Seddon in 1970 and there are close-ups of newspaper clippings about the takeover. Atkinson Director, David Gregson, and Seddon Chairman, Harry Redmond, speak of the takeover and the company's new vehicle, the Seddon-Atkinson, built at Oldham and Preston. Richard Ide, of American company International Harvester (who later bought out Seddon-Atkinson) is seen in a lorry. There are scenes from the Oldham Seddon-Atkinson factory: a management meeting, lorries on the production line, a manager being interviewed, the drawing office and lorries being driven out of the factory into Oldham. The new Seddon-Atkinson vehicle launch takes place at a Heathrow hotel and there is a press conference at a military vehicle testing track at Chobham, Surrey. A company Director talks about a vehicle's features and pressmen are taken on test drives. |
