Synopsis

B650/1: Item focusing on Irlam Steelworks in Salford, which suffered massive job losses in 1974 and eventually closed in 1979. Includes footage of workers striking and picketing, general views of the derelict steelworks and interviews with ex-workers expressing their anger at the closure and difficulty in finding new work. Irlam Job Centre worker Mary Garnett speaks of the effect of the closure of the local area and there are shots of new factories being built on the old Irlam Steelworks site.
