Synopsis |
Presenter Ray Gosling visits Salford where he suggests that problems faced by Salford residents in 1983 have changed little since 1933 when Walter Greenwood wrote "Love on the Dole", namely high unemployment and poor housing. Includes stills of Hankinson Way - or 'Hankey Park' - in Salford in the thirties, and footage of the shopping precinct in the same area in 1983. Comparisons are drawn between the book's protagonist, Harry Hardcastle, and a young unemployed engineer from Salford, Carl Kelly. Kelly is shown looking for work at the job centre and window shopping with his wife and the couple are interviewed about how unemployment affects their lives. Michael Goldstone, Managing Director of Ward and Goldstone Ltd, a Salford electrical engineers, is interviewed about the recent redundancies at the company. Salford Job Centre employee Joe Lyons, the leader of Salford City Council and local Labour Party member, Peter Gunn are interviewed about unemployment in Salford. |
