Synopsis

B85/1: Programme on the very active retired population of the North West. Lynda Lee Potter joins seven hundred over-60s from Manchester on a trip to Buxton Pavillion Gardens for a day of ballroom dancing. The day is organised by the "Companions Club" and is run by Greater Manchester Transport. There are numerous shots of elderly couples dancing. Potter interviews many of them, asking about the secret to a happy retirement and marriage and also interviews organiser Les Lumsden from GM Transport. Potter then visits Manchester College of Adult Education, which offers 300 courses for retired people and there are exterior shots of the College on Oxford Road. An art class for retired people is shown and two elderly men are interviewed from the class. Principal of the College, William Tyler, is interviewed. Elderly people are seen playing squash, badminton and doing ballet. 17m17s
