Description |
A co-production, funded by the EU via GSARA/Brussels, between five film-making groups in Belgium, Italy, Germany, France and Britain, celebrating the 100th anniversary of International May Day by reflecting, analysing and expressing past and present struggles in each of the five countries through a series of five chapters. A montage by the veteran Belgian film-maker Paul Meyer introduces, links and concludes the five autonomous programmes. Part 1 includes the contributions from Belgium, 'Fosses Communes,' which recounts the history of migration into the coal mining area of the Borinage and the changing nature of employment and unemployment in this area. It is followed by the British contribution, made by WFA in Manchester, about Kirkby Unemployed Centre, 'Unemployment and Low Pay are no accident', which recounts the history of unemployment on this large overspill estate on the fringes of Liverpool. |
