Description

Paul Okojie interviews Mrs Margaret Simey, the Merseyside Police Authority Chairperson. She speaks about her experience on a previous authority before 1974 when it changed. When the Conservatives were in government, the role was clearly to support the Chief Constable. When Labour was in government it became a forum for democratic scrutiny for democratic control. So very much a political issue. She explains that 'a politician is responsible before an event, police during and event and Police Committee after the event,' and speaks at length about different approaches in Police Authorities.
