Description

Plenary session of the LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) Conference. Held in a large committee room at Manchester Town Hall and attended by over 100 people with a panel of speakers on the stage. Brother John Edmunds speaks on the relationship between local government and the unions and is critical of the rather 'cosy' relationship between Shop Stewards and Local Government (LG) officials. Followed by a voluntary sector speaker who stresses the commitment to improving services but LG as partners need to understand the constraints faced by voluntary sector - particularly financial constraints and slow payments being made. Keever Coombs - Leader of Merseyside Council then speaks (as substitute for Ken Livingstone) about the abolition debate and bill.
