Jubilee celebrations in Leigh 1949, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the incorporation of the Borough of Leigh - street decorations; the council in session; civic dignitaries gathered for the civic luncheon; people arriving in cars and on foot for the opening of the local government and industrial exhibition; exhibits and spectators at the Co-op Hall; bowling finals at Pennington Hall; a pageant at St. Josephs Hall; modelling fashions through the years; at the gym; hydroplane racing; a torchlight procession; a swimming gala and presentation of prizes; the carnival procession - fancy dress, floats - some pulled by ponies, morris dancing, fire engines; a firework display at the football ground. |
