Plenary session of LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) Conference. Held in a large committee room at Manchester Town Hall and attended by over 100 people with a panel of speakers on the stage.
Keever Coombs - Leader of Merseyside Council speaks (as substitute for Ken Livingstone) about the abolition debate and bill which will effect Liverpool, Greater London Authority (GLA) and Edinburgh. Then a series of contributions from the floor. Judy McNight speaks in defence of the welfare state and how tide is turning in popular support against the cuts. Necessity to get message over to people absolutely crucial. Followed by Alistair McCreagh from NUPE (National Union for Public Employees) speaking about co-ordinating the response of Local Government and trade unions to oppose Government measures. He speaks against any public abuse of one another. Followed by John Newman from UNISON & Joint Trade Union Committee who takes up the issue raised by Brother Edmunds about incorporation.
