Description |
Chinese New Year celebrations in China Town, Manchester. Street scenes of crowds milling around St Peters Square, waiting for the procession to arrive. Lots of children and families. Procession arrives with Chinese dragons. Chinese singing in background. Blowing up balloons in a balloon stall. Then into China Town, with a stage set up in the car park. A number of celebrities including Pat Phoenix and a DJ from Piccadilly Radio greet the crowds. Games and competitions for the children. The Lord Mayor gives a welcoming speech, wishing people success for the Chinese year of the rat. More speakers are followed by the Lord Mayor waking the lion of the New Year amidst drumming and clanging of cymbals. The lion dancing continues on the forecourt of the stage in front of the crowds. |
