Description

The Whitbread West Pennines newsreel features promotional events for Whitbread breweries that took place in 1978. The events are sponsored by Whitbread and we see their senior staff at these events presenting awards and giving speeches. The film opens with scenes from the North Lonsdale show at Ulverston where there are horse and cattle shows. We see the qualifying round for the Whitbread Young Riders Competition at the Manchester Show. Jean Milner is the winner on her horse Style. We see the Taxi Drivers Outing for Handicapped Children setting off from Rivington Hall - Jimmy Savile is present. There are motor boat racing scenes at Thornton, where we see the North West Powerboat Racing Championship taking place on the River Wyre. At Anfield Stadium there is a Whitbread sponsored match between Liverpool Football Club and Queens Park Rangers, with a buffet lunch before the game for Whitbread staff. There is a similar event for a Whitbread sponsored match between Everton and Southampton. After the game Colin Todd is presented with the award for 'Man of the Match'. There are scenes from Shaw Hill Golf Club where we see The 1978 Whitbread Trophy Northern Golf Tournament. The tournament is between West Pennines and East Pennines and many of the players are named in the commentary as we see them taking part in the game. After the tournament there is an event for the participants and Whitbread senior staff members. The film ends with scenes from the Samlesbury fully automated can products warehouse. We see the automated system which stores the canned beer and gets it out onto the lorries in action.
