Description |
In 1993, photographer Chris Harrison embarked on a project to photograph the young men of Pendleton, an inner-city area of Salford, as part of his residency at the Viewpoint Photography Gallery. To get to know his subjects and their community better before starting work, Harrison went to live in the area, setting up a photographic studio in the local Phoenix Theatre. He took the time to establish contacts among the marginalised group he was focussing on, who were mostly of a similar age to himself. In this short film, made by the community video unit State of Independence, the photographer talks about his approach to work and this project, drawing on how young men have historically been presented in art. He also explains how getting to know the young men he is working with enables him to look beyond the forbidding stereotype image of the inner-city hoodie, and reveal another aspect, to show the individual person ‘under the hood’. |
