A capacity audience in the Free Trade Hall in Manchester listens to a stirring speech from Labour MP Tony Benn, following a protest march in the city in support of the miners’ strike. In his address, the MP pays tribute to the marchers, the miners, and the leader of the National Union of Mineworkers, Arthur Scargill, and praises the work done by the women’s support groups in the mining communities. He also talks about the links forged with other organisations and movements such as the anti-nuclear women protestors’ group at Greenham Common, saying that the strike is part of the larger struggle for workers’ rights in Britain. |
