Description

A report on archaeological excavations at the site of Royton Hall, Oldham, beginning with a brief look at the town, then revealing the history of the hall using old prints, maps and photographs. On the excavation site, as community volunteers painstakingly dig and investigate the uncovered walls and foundations, Adam Thompson from the Manchester University Archaeological Unit discusses their findings, and Doug Ashmore from Royton Local History Society talks about the site. There is a brief segment of broadcast footage from BBC North West Tonight with a live report on the dig, and an open weekend is held for members of the public before the site is re-covered for safety, with the hope of further excavations in the future.
