Description |
A record of the Coronation Review of the fleet, when more than 300 ships gathered in the Solent for the royal review. From destroyers to aircraft carriers, frigates to submarines, the film displays the range of British naval capability of the time. The royal party, comprising the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Mother and Princess Margaret, board the HMS Surprise, which is acting as the royal yacht for the event. There are also foreign ships, including the USS ‘Baltimore’, the Soviet cruiser ‘Sverdlov’, and the Italian training ship ‘Amerigo Vespucci’. There is a fly-past by the Fleet Air Arm, and the reel ends with the assembled fleet illuminated at night, when fireworks are set off as a finale to the review. |
