Description

Plenary session of LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) Conference. Held in a large committee room at Manchester Town Hall and attended by over 100 people with a panel of speakers on the stage. Contributions from the floor. John Newman from UNISON & Joint Trade Union Committee takes up the issue raised by Brother Edmunds about incorporation and feels this is not a problem. He is followed by Richard Harrett who calls for a non-divisive attitude and the need to go forward supporting comrades in London, Liverpool and Edinburgh and the necessity to widen out the campaign.
Steve Briggs speaks about the campaign against Social Service cuts in the context of the Green paper that has just come out. John Hamilton from Liverpool speaks about how attitudes have shifted in the popular mind after the initial success government had in persuading people that these cuts were the natural order of things. He talks about the necessity to help people develop a different philosophical outlook. John Gunnel from West Yorkshire endorses Keever Coombes regarding the protection of jobs and services.
