Description |
In a meeting chaired by Kath Locke at 8411 (Community Centre), Moss Side, Manchester, Wally Brown talks about the history of black people's settlement in Liverpool. Refers to documents of the time such as the Picture Post in 1949 covering the British colour bar. Many examples of racism during & post-war- e.g. ban on entering Liverpool 8 ballroom in Rialto Cinema. In 1948, the first race riot in Liverpool - attacks on black houses and restaurants - but mainly blacks arrested. Talks about efforts of the black community to organise themselves as white-led initiatives - Stanley House - seen as patronising. The 1967-68 Hunt Report on Youth & Community Work ignored Liverpool and in 1972, more race riots. Gives examples of how black people have organised in Liverpool - Black Links Magazine, campaign for Paddington School in Edge Hill/Egerton, campaign against article in the Listener about 'half caste' problem, establishment of Charles Wootton Centre, Wanleechey, Liverpool Black Organisation and Army Navy Stores campaign, and the Liverpool 8 Defence Committee arising out of the 1981 riots. Establishment of Law Centre and relationship with City Council. |
