Description

Event at the 5th Anniversary Gala of the 1984/5 Miners' Strike at Manchester Town Hall on 4th March 1989. Side of stage footage of afternoon rally in the Main Hall to a maximum capacity audience. Panel of speakers chaired by Sylvie Pye from National Women Against Pit Closures. Other speakers include Graham Stringer, Elaine Simone (with French interpreter), Tony Benn MP, Alan Simone, the General Secretary of French Miners and Arthur Scargill. Each speaks in turn. Alan Simone - history will remember your courage, your determination, your solidarity - receives a standing ovation. He salutes the miners' wives in particular and acknowledges the strike would never have been what it was without them. Tony Benn MP names all the struggles over many years - Silent Night, printers, Greenham Common and the upcoming Scottish Poll Tax vote. He gives the historical context, particularly Watt Tyler.
