Description

Scientific film featuring the permanent sterile downward air-flow enclosure, patented by Dr Hugh Howorth. Professor Sir John Charnley explains how the new ventilation system was installed at Wrightington Hospital in 1966, preventing contaminated air from infecting patients during hip replacement surgery. Tracer gas, convection currents and colour Schlieren photography are used to show how conventional air circulation assists the spread of infection and how the exponential flow system prevents it. Ends with a surgical team demonstrating the sequence of gowning up before an operation.
