Description

Film about life in Styal. Opens with footage from Manchester, ten miles from Styal, showing heavy traffic and busy shopping areas. Continues with shots of the countryside around Styal, the village and farmland. Places of worship, businesses, a school, the police station and Styal railway station are all seen as is the interior and exterior of The Old Ship Inn. On 12th May 1970, Ethel Gee (one of the Portland Spy Ring) is seen leaving Styal Women's Prison, pursued by camera crews and journalists. She gives a brief interview to the media. Various activities are featured including farming, a cricket match, a football match, a play and an artist at work. A brass band, majorettes and children in fancy dress are seen at a fete and Rose Queen celebrations are featured. There is footage from a jumble sale, Bonfire Night and Remembrance Sunday as well as a Christmas dinner. The film progresses from one summer to the next spring with shots of the area illustrating the seasons, a snowbound Styal is seen prior to shots of recently hatched birds. The film closes with footage of Manchester Airport.
