THE BLUE BOX
Date: 1997 Film Number: 8070

Documentary looking at the history and restoration of the 'The Century Theatre', better known as The Blue Box; a mobile theatre that provided entertainment in the Lake District from 1948 onwards. The theatre ended up in Keswick after touring became impractical. Black and white photographs show the theatre's assembly and construction. There are shots of the exteriors, dressing rooms and of the final show - a pastiche of The Mikado about the closing of the theatre. Workmen and volunteers dismantle the theatre and it is moved on to the back of a wagon. There are short interviews about the moving of the theatre in the 1950s and the hopes for its future; it is finally shown in its new location as part of a living museum in the Midlands.
