THE KING IN MANCHESTER

Film of King George and Queen Mary's visit to Manchester and Liverpool. The royal motorcade is seen arriving in Albert Square, Manchester. Various civic dignitaries greet their majesties - King George V inspects the Manchester Regiment while Queen Mary inspects nurses from the Territorial Army. The king addresses the crowds before laying the foundation stone for the Town Hall extension and opening the library (ceremonies not seen). Continues with footage of the royal motorcade arriving at Liverpool. Again civic dignitaries, soldiers and crowds are present. The king makes a speech and performs the official opening of the Mersey Tunnel. The royal motorcade drives through the tunnel and is greeted by crowds and soldiers in Birkenhead.
 
 
 
THEIR MAJESTIES PAY VISIT TO MANCHESTER

Film of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Manchester on 17th July 1934. The Royal motorcade arrives in a crowd-filled Albert Square. The King gives the Manchester Regiments 2nd Battalion a set of silver drums, presented by the City of Manchester. The King delivers a speech before laying the foundation stone for the Town Hall extension and opening the Central Reference Library.

Film made by the Manchester and Salford Blind Aid Society (Est 1900) to promote the facilities and benefits which they offer the blind and partially sighted. Includes shots of Isabel M Heywood - the Society's Founder - and the blind entering the Society's headquarters at 30 Tonman Street, Manchester. Blind people are seen in a carpentry workshop, performing a concert and playing bar billiards. There is also footage from Southport where the Society organised holidays at the Godfrey Ermen Memorial Home which it built in 1904. Continues with footage of partially sighted people playing skittles and the blind playing cricket with an audible ball in Heaton Park Manchester. Blind women are seen skipping. The Society's three homes on Eccles Old Road, Pendleton, Salford - homes for the elderly - are featured. Blind people are seen reading braille and communicating through the manual alphabet as well as doing work and convalescing in the sick bay. The film ends with an appeal for gifts. The commentary is of a forthright nature using descriptive terms of the period.
