WYTHENSHAWE CIVIC WEEK 1948

Footage from the first Wythenshawe Civic Week, September 1948. The site, Wythenshawe Park, is seen being prepared - Marquees are erected. The opening ceremony is attended by various civic dignitaries - William M. Shepherd MP installs Beryl Flint as Miss Wythenshawe. The Lord Mayor of Manchester Miss Mary Kingsmill-Jones attends a religious ceremony the following day. A clergyman is seen preaching from an open topped lorry. A wide variety of other events are featured briefly - children are seen dancing, racing and boxing, a comedian (?) performs in a marquee and the AEI Symphony Orchestra play in a works canteen. The final day involves a procession, including various political and civic groups, children in fancy dress, marching bands and floats.

[QUIRK WEDDING]

Film of the wedding of Mr and Mrs E. Quirk. The groom, best man, and other male guests assemble and take cars to the church (St Mary's in Horwich) followed by the bridesmaids and the bride. The bride enters the church with her father, and is next seen leaving (the ceremony is not filmed). Photographs are taken of various groups and the guests throw confetti. There is then footage of the reception (held in a hotel in Chorley).

The various dignitaries are seen leaving the Town Hall to travel to the site of the new power station at Huncoat near Accrington on 31 January 1948. On arrival, speeches are made, the Mayor cuts the first sod with a ceremonial spade and then makes a speech himself.

Winnington Sunday School enjoy a day out at Alvanley on 19 June 1948, playing on the swings and slide as well as a game of rounders. There are brief scenes of a group out hill-walking before shots of Winnington Methodist Church members displaying trophies and certificates won at an Eisteddfod.

Sykes family holiday to Borrowdale in the Lake District. A brief view of the famous Bridge House in Ambleside is followed by views of the lake and valley. The family visit Grange Bridge and are seen walking on the hills. Geoff Sykes plays with another child in the garden of the hotel, and a number of different farm animals are seen. The family take a boat trip on the lake and visit the market at Keswick. The film ends with views of a number of waterfalls.

The girls and teachers of Grange Park School, St Helens on holiday in the Lake District. After stopping at the Kopper Kettle on route, they arrive at the Wayfarers Lodge on the Langdale Estate, Great Langdale. They walk to Grasmere, stopping for a picnic and a play on a slide. They visit Dove Cottage, paddle at Sour Milk Ghyll and clamber up rocks at Dungeon Ghyll. A walk from Hawkshead to Tarn Hows is followed by scenes back at Langdale - swimming, playing outdoor games and listening to the radio. There are visits to Keswick, Derwentwater, Watendlath and Rosthwaite, a walk to Ambleside via Loughrigg Tarn and a boat trip on Windermere. GRANGE PARK GIRLS' SCHOOL, ST HELENS

Scenes at Grange Park Girls' School, St Helens - girls arriving and assembly. There are geography and P.E lessons and girls are seen reading in the library. The senior girls have lessons in domestic science - baking, cleaning and ironing. In a music lesson The girls are seen singing in a music lesson, conducting experiments in science and designing dresses and painting a mural in art. Lunch break is followed by drama and some girls are seen making dolls, teddybears and Christmas cards. The senior girls make and display clothes and leather bags, while the younger girls do weaving.
